First Olympic Meet

Hey guys, I competed in my first Olympic weightlifting meet this weekend and wanted to get some pointers. I went 80, 82, 85 on my snatch and 115, 115, 123 on clean and jerk.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I don't understand did you have to power snatch and power clean?

No, i'm just not comfortable in the full squat. It is something I am working on, but it is a work in progress.

You are bloody strong to hit those numbers for power stances, well done!

Re: First Olympic Meet

Hey Brandon. Here's my 2c.

Look more forward instead of down and forward. Open up the chest and get as low as you can in the bottom. I think you could externally rotate the elbows more in the setup and set the back more but don't know if that's the limit of getting into the starting position.

Can you shoulder the clean? Because technically the bar should be on the shoulders and not the chest. Chest is a red light. Other cues for the setup are the same as the snatch.

Blair, Thanks for the pointers. I have just really started working on the bottom position. I can shoulder the clean, i think i was nervous and i filled my ankle on the first attempt and that threw me off also.

Re: First Olympic Meet

Yeah, I jerked for years off my chest till Lincoln Brigham said it had to be on my shoulders.

Took a bit of getting used to but definitely don't tip forwards afterwards.

Re: First Olympic Meet

You are definitely strong, that is not your issue.

My recommendation would be to stop doing power cleans/snatches all together. Do the full lifts every time even if that means your numbers are drastically reduced for a short while.
