Thinking of becoming an Olympic Weightlifter

Controlled Practices Held Two Weeks Before Competition

We have these events two weeks before the official meet and it is set it up like a informal contest. (See clip below) The lifters warm up on a seperate platform and they are allowed three attempts like a meet. At the coaches discretion the lifters may be given one or two additional attempts. The attempts are judged just like a meet and the weight on the bar does not go down between attempts. The weight on the bar can only increase. All meet rules are followed. Ideally you will want to hold these the same time as the lifting happens at the meet. You will want a small audience and the athletes are encouraged to bring their families. The athletes do no other exercises that day except the snatch and clean & jerk. After the event we had a picnic style meal for the athletes, went over final meet preperati˘ns and talked weightlifting. The event is a combination of the old York Barbell picnics and the Bill Starr "dress rehearsals". The name comes from the Abadjiev Bulgarian workouts.

These are really a great way to see where you are at and to discover any areas you need to fine tune before a competition. I would strongly recommend this for anyone who is preparing for a Olympic Weightlifting contest. They are great for team building and work extremely well for young athletes and novices. The clip below is from The Queen Emma Athletic Club a community outreach program sponsored by Good Shepherd Church and is administrated by Keku Akana and a group of volunteer coaches, myself included.
