Here's a w/fs link to a picture of what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Burnside

Robert, if you didn't see it in the thread where I mentioned it, do you know who my avatar is a picture of?
You know, Barry, I read the thread but do not remember. I don't recognise the person but I remember the discussion (vaguely)

"Damn the torpedoes: full speed ahead". Battle of Mobile Bay.

I wouldn't expect normal people to get it, but I thought as a Navy guy you may have seen that picture. It is pretty small, though.

Don't know much about the man--he apparently didn't have much humor--but I've always liked that line.

ADM Farragut.

It's unfortunate, much of USN tradition and history is rarely discussed in the Fleet these days... I have an interest in it for most of my 20 years a collateral duty of my job in the Navy was enlisted keeper of naval tradition. Farragut gets mentioned nowadays yearly during Hispanic heritage month as the 1st US Admiral of Hispanic origin

No doubt it is obvious to everyone that that is far more important than his competence as a leader and warrior. It would seem any more it's not even who you know, but who you chose as parents, and their relative rank in the victimological aristocracy.

I think it was part of his "I haven't shaved in three days" stubble (not that I can talk about not bothering to shave ).
