Re: Tape worm diet

I was going to rearrange mandy's post, but the joke was too easy.

We all think it's crazy to ingest a tape worm to lose weight, but would you ingest a tape to get something important to you, like a 10 % drop in all your wod times and a 10% increase in all your lifts?

Re: Tape worm diet

I thought this was a Victorian diet method...didn't realize people still do this. I'm really only considering this from a morbidly obese perspective, because otherwise it's absurd considering the healthy alternatives.

Is this healthier than being obese? Is it just as effective (or at least close) as surgeries? If so, it may be a decent choice for obese people to avoid the long-term effects of some of the surgeries out there. For that matter, what are the long-term effects of this? Aside from dying, of course...that's pretty long-term. But then again, so is dying from being 400lbs.

people will do some unmentionable things to reach their goals

Re: Tape worm diet

Hell yes I'd let a worm live in me if it gave me a significant performance boost.

I'm a combat athelete, though, and my fitness is more important than merely a source of income or pride. In war all that matters is winning and having my troops come home safe, so even magical tapeworms are legit as far as I'm concerned. Just as long as the bad guys don't get them.

"merely a source of income"

I wouldn't use the word "merely".

Re: Tape worm diet

I'll pass on that.

There are only several hundred safer ways to quickly lose weight.

Ingestion of parasitic worms doesn't even make the top twenty.

Re: Tape worm diet

I think John's point is valid. In the case of being severely overweight, this might work better and safe than surgery, and once they get down to a normal wieght, then the parasite can be removed with antibiotics.

Still, you have the problem of dietary habits and what not, but you would have more time to work with the person on it while they lost weight.

For any other reason, this is pretty messed up.

Seems like micronutrient deficiencies would be the main concern, even with supplementation.

Which, interestingly, is one of the same top concerns of many of the bariatric surgeries. Difference is, once the worm is gone, the micronutrient problems are gone with it. Gastric bypass and whatnot, it's permanent.

though repulsive at first glance, I could see the validity of at least doing research in the context of an alternative to bariatric surgery. Obviously in any other case, this fits in the category of just plain stupid.
