Cheap mats/floors to train MMA, BJJ,etc ??

Im thinking about making a training zone in my basement but i dont know where to start. My only concern is the price.. I looked to get some tatamis and they arent cheap. Being a student in the moment, money doesnt get by very often.. so if you guys have a cheap way of getting some mats/floor to train mixed martial arts i would appreciate it very much.

Thanks alot.

Puzzel mat are great and very cheap. Get some carpet matting for under the mats if needed. They are easy to put down and take back up so you have space to do other types of training.

Back in the day in Brazil there weren't grappling mats like there are now. Here is the old school way to make a mat: Throw a tarp over a padding component such as several layers of carpet padding. Basically Put the padding down and run duct tape around the edges securing it to the floor then put the tarp over that and tape it the same way. Cheap, effective, easy to clean and will actually result in less mat burn than commercial grappling mats.

Tommy,
I bought my Zebra mats used from the manufacturer. They call them competition mats or something. Basically, they have been used for a tournament or two, then they sell them, blood stains and all. Not kidding about the blood.

I think I paid 60 cents on the dollar, roughly.

Two layers of the Costco puzzle mats work pretty good for everything except takedowns.

I second the Dollamur mats. You can find great deals on their ebay store and because they come in different sizes you can aquire them as you can afford it until you fill up the area you desire.

I have 200 sqft of their mats and they are great! Because of their design you can even cut them (which comes very handy when outfitting a space!) without damaging them at all. They're also very easy to transport due to their light weight and flexroll system. Just roll & strap it and you're gold!

If you can be patient & persistent you can find them for a great deal. Just keep checking ebay. Good Luck!

Ok thanks all you guys for all your answers. I'll keep looking for "the deal". Altough, I got another question.. do you guys only use mats to wrestle or you have any king of flooring under it. I mean i saw some using tires + plywood for the rebound or styrofoam.. I want to get your ideas on the subject. I will mostly wrestle my friends and we will probably use some rough takedowns, etc .. Discuss

Thanks alot.

Tommy, all I have is 1 layer of carpet padding and 1 layer of carpet. It works very well for all areas: stand-up, takedowns, and grappling.
