I think you're overthinking it a bit. A mass gainer supplement is just the sum of it's parts, nothing more - most contain a protein source (usually whey), a carb source (waxy maize, dextrose, etc) and a fat source. If you need them combined to be convenient then fine, but for the most part you can put your own together (whey powder, dextrose is cheap, creatine in bulk is cheap and most mass gainers have it) with a similar nutrient profile and probably more actual food sources (whole milk, nut butter, oats, etc) that will be a whole lot cheaper.
