Re: Whey Protein Isnt Evil..is It

Shane,

I eat whey. I am not dead. Your logic is fail.

Whey, like dairy, grains, rice, etc. should be removed from your diet to gauge how these things affect you. If you find you can handle or even increase performance with them, than use them. But you won't know until you remove them.

That was sarcasm--it's not Paleo because it's not protein from meat, fish, eggs, or poultry, but only someone with seriously misplaced priorities would consider it evil. Along the lines of what Brian said, if whey protein is the worst thing in your diet, you're probably doing ok.

true, and i don't disagree with this statement. imagine what he'd say about GOMAD.

I don't think whey is evil. if used in moderation and mixed into a shake such that you're not just having when protein and a bunch of sugar, and it helps you avoid going to dunkin for breakfast after your morning WOD (or whatever), it's probably a net positive.

it shouldn't be considered a necessity, and it's not as good as natural food, but I don't think the OP believes otherwise, so no big deal. it's also hella-expensive IMO, but I'm too cheap to buy grass-fed beef or free-range eggs or a lot of that other stuff that's better for you too.

Re: Whey Protein Isnt Evil..is It

I'd say, the reason people claim it's evil is one, it's not paleo, two, whey elicits an insulin response. Dairy proteins are the only proteins that cause an insulin response, and naturally, we're trying to blunt that. But one time that is perfectly okay to take in whey, is immediately following a workout, when your bosy is insulin sensitive. This isn't to say that eating some eggwhites wouldn't be better, but after a workout, we're trying to start recovery as soon as possible so a fast absorbing protein seems appropriate. Maybe try to get some solid protein after a workout in as well as your protein shake, this would provide a quick amino acid release, as well as a sustained release.

LOL

If your pro paleo and worried about insulin then post workout is the only time you would want to take it.

As eric said, whey is a byproduct of cheese. Cheese is a byproduct of milk. Milk has lactose. Lactose is a sugar. Sugar raises insulin levels in the body.

But imo whey is one of the better things to take post workout with a bit of carbohydrates; because we want to raise insulin levels after our workouts and whey empties out of the small intestine and gets into the blood stream faster than any other protein.
