How Tough are You?

This left me shaking my head, so I had to share.

My 89 year old Grandmother fell, on Friday. Yesterday (Monday) she decided to go to the doctor, who promptly pointed out to her that she had a broken hip. She's headed into surgery later today to have pins put in, etc.

Why did my Grandmother wait until Monday to talk to the doctor? She didn't want to be an inconvenience for him over the weekend. I feel like such a sissy in comparison.

I think you will find a lot of folks from that generation are alot tougher than their baby boomer offspring and whiny Grandkids. My 91 year old Grandfather fell down his basment steps and recieved a hairline fracture to his vertebrae. He didnt go to the doctor for weeks. I know it sounds kind of cliche but growing up during the depression and WW2 really toughened these people up.

Re: How Tough are You?

I watched my Grandpa stand in his kitchen and pull a tooth that was bothering him with a set of pliers. When we asked him why he didn't go to the dentist he just laughed and said he didn't have time for that nonsense.

Re: How Tough are You?

Well I tough it up with many of the WODs when the assmar kicks in. You can hear me wheezing from across the gym, but I still go at it.

Once I almost blacked out, I guess I didn't eat enough that day or something (early work out). Also had some difficulting breathing. Decided to suck it up and at least try to finish the WOD. Didn't get to finish it, but walked a quarter mile to my ex's apartment so I could collapse, instead of walking all the way back to my place. I told her not to call for an ambulance. Half an hour later, she did. I kept insisting I was fine, and tried to stand up. Not quite sure how long it took, but I finally stood up. Paramedics were escorting me down the stairs, and I almost fell. They said they weren't comfortable with leaving me, so they brought me to the hospital. My ex was ****ed I didn't ask her to come with me.

When I was 14 or so, I backpacked with a 45 lb backpack, not sure how many miles up we were. This was the third day or so. Heat exhaustion + asthma is not a fun experience. Didn't want to delay the team, so I kept going. Eventually I had to take a "short breather." Ended up lasting quite a while, and the vultures were getting ready to have a go at me. I was then taken back to base camp.

There's a lot more stories; doesn't compare to a broken hip or hairline fracture to the vertebrae, but I'd like to think I'm not a wuss. I've only broken a bone once when I was 7 or so, and it was only my pinky. Other than that, I haven't really had the opportunity to see how I would fair with a broken bone.

Re: How Tough are You?

I walked off a broken tibia and tried to play rugby with a broken collor bone, but I couldn't pass to the side opposite the break. I still made the party though

Re: How Tough are You?

At work I accidently screwed a self tapping screw right through my thumbnail. The self tapper screws has almost a flathead like tip, so it can screw through metal. I screwed it on half way and well had to unscrew it out which was way more painful. Was one of the high torque drills.

LOL nothing compared to the pain an frustration of a hell of a good stubbed toe. The ones that rip your toenail off. Those are the worst cause you know you did it to yourself by being lazy!!
