If one wanted to make the pumpkin soup from the recent PM, would canned pumpkin work as well as baking your own? Obviously the canned pumpkin is creamy vs being more solid, but if the only ingredients are pumpkin, is it the same thing? Also, for those of you cooking your own pumpkins, where do you get them? Are you just going to the Jack-o-lantern place and getting some smaller ones or is there a certain type to be looking for?

If you're baking your own pumpkin, make sure you buy the smaller pumpkins called pie pumpkins, sugar pumpkins, or sometimes organic pumpkins. They're naturally sweeter and more orange colored than jack-o-lantern pumpkins which won't have much taste.

Standard grocery stores should be carrying them this time of year. You might have to look at the more upscale grocery stores if you're not lucky. But they should be pretty common. And they cost about $2 or $3.

Scott-
I'm pretty sure canned pumpkin would work just fine. It wouldn't be as chunky, but that's not really important anyway. I haven't tried using canned pumpkin yet, but it would be nice when one is short on time (as seems to be always!). I found good pumpkins at my local Safeway. Scott Hagnas CrossFit Portland |
