Severe Elbow Pain

Severe pain (Tennis elbow?) from doing this workout.

Is it because of a weak grip or what?

Any suggestions on rest or improving to avoid the pain?


Complete as many rounds as possible 20 minutes of:
95 pound Thruster, 5 reps
95 pound Hang Powercleans, 7 reps
95 pound Sumo Deadlift High-pull, 10 reps

Hey - I don't know if it is the same or not, but my pain was on the inside of the elbow - like a ligament or something. After giving it a weeks rest and then trying again, it still hurt. I tried to work through it over 30 days or so, but the pain never went away. I finally went to the docs and they said it was probably just severely inflamed. I tried advil three times a day for 10 days...didn't work, so they put me on a prednisone pack for 14 days. It has only been four days - no upper body activity whatsoever, and so far so good. I wish I had gone to the docs sooner...hopefully this will help.

You probably have elbow tendinitis. Lots of advice here on that if you search.
I struggle with it for months until I did the following:
Rest my grip
Massage with ice cubes directly on skin
Massage hard with a golf ball and tennis ball (triceps and forearm)
"Climber's stretches" -google them

Good luck. Advil did nothing. Aleve is better, but didn't help much.

Generally, if you're getting elbow pain with Oly lifts or similar you're bending your arms too early in the lifts which puts tons of stress on the elbows. Check your form as well.

Stretch it, ice it, massage it, rest it, etc.

Google medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow) or lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). One or both are likely what you're experiencing.

Steven and Camille are right to point out that the best at-home treatment for either is REST, ice, massage, and gentle stretching. Anti-inflammatory doses of NSAIDs (e.g. Ibuprofen 600mg every six hours) for a week will speed recovery, but don't take any OTC drug for more than a few days without talking to your doctor. If you're interested in some homeopathic medicine, I've used Traumeel ointment (recommended by Garrett Smith) for a similar problem with great success in the past.

Depending on the severity, your age, your normal recovery time, etc. this can take a couple weeks up to a couple months to fully heal.

Once healed, practice your form to reduce the chances of this happening again. I've found that muscle ups, cleans, and anything involving a front rack are the worst culprits.
