Bump.

I used fishing line in a criss cross thru the center of a foam ball on my 18" mold (250 to 210lb). Worked great, its not off center or imbalanced and you cant even see, much less find the line. I think it was 20lb test or less.

Objective observation: as Rob said above, hes very anti-inserts of any type (He even mentions it at his cert). However, Steve Slater doesn't hesitate to recommend them. FWIW.

As for sealer, I haven't used any on mine yet, but Ive heard good things if done properly. I plan to try it on my current, well cured stones and my next batch of fresh stones to see what happens.
