Fuel for a Powerlifting Meet?

Hi everyone,
I'm competing in my first powerlifting meet next Saturday, and I was wondering what to eat throughout the day during the actual competition. I'll have to be there at 7:00am for weigh-in, and then I have a few hours before my first lift. Then a few hours between each lift (Squat, Bench, Deadlift). They said they'd provide pizza at the venue, but I'm very, very lactose intolerant so I need to bring my own food. I'm trying to figure out what to pack that wouldn't require refrigeration and would fuel me properly for my lifts.

Note: In general, I eat fairly clean, almost-paleo. I do use non-dairy-based protein powders, and I eat legumes, some rice, and some soy... I have severe IBS and this is what's worked for me to keep it under control.

Just eat what you normally eat. Powerlifting meets aren't like doing multiple WODs etc.

Re: Fuel for a Powerlifting Meet?

I've got a meet this Saturday also, and I'll be driving to the location tomorrow afternoon to get the lay of the land.
Tonight, I am grilling an extra steak that I will bring with me for protein during the day. I will also bring an apple, orange and a few bananas, as well as a few bottles of water, some pumpkin seeds and some protein powder and my shaker.

Suggestion - get there as soon as it opens for the weigh-in and once youve done that and had your gear checked, go eat a good breakfast. That will hold you over through the squats. Then eat a snack before bench and another before DL.

Best of luck.

Nothing to say about nutrition, but good luck on your first meet. Try to post a recap of what you thought about it when it's over if you can. I like reading about first impressions of powerlifting / weightlifting meets.

Re: Fuel for a Powerlifting Meet?

Thanks guys! I guess I'm more curious about what I should bring for a "Good breakfast." I figure I won't have a fridge and won't be able to leave the site to get good. Should I just pack my typical morning omelet and trust that it'll stay edible for a few hours at room temp?

Baked sweet potatoes hold out well without refrigeration.

Fruit, dried fruit. Nuts

For protein, jerky, maybe pack a cooler if you don't mind eating cool meat. Or take your protein shakes with you.

Just make sure you eat enough throughout the day.

Yep. I always bring a small cooler. Lots of people will have them.

Re: Fuel for a Powerlifting Meet?

I'm not a nutrition expert but at my last meet, the top girl (who was a national level competitor) was chowing down on large container of wild rice, a banana, dried fruits, and nuts right about an hour before she headed into her first lifts (and in between).

I never change anything up contest day, the meet more then likely will be easier then training. Its the days leading up to the contest you need to worry about sticking to your diet!
