Best sub for 1RM Snatches

My monday WOD will be the Snatch 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps, and I have a question. I work out at the gym at work, and we don't have bumpers or a place to safely do max effort snatches. Which sub would be better, to do 1RM dumbbell snatches each arm, or do barbell snatches at lower than max weights?

I guess I could do maybe 3 reps at a lower weight with the barbell.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd imagine the closest thing you could do would be cleans for the explosion part and OHS for the shoulder stability part.. that's just a guess though.

You could do snatch pulls and OHS. You'll reap most of the benefits of the snatch that way.

I have a similar issue, although I admit I also need to work on form before I attempt a true 1RM snatch...

But anyway, I'd say go as high as you can without having to worry about dropping it... 3RM or 5RM, whatever you're comfortable with. It's still going to give you the benefit of a heavy snatch, and you should still be able to increase over time, just more slowly.

Re: Best sub for 1RM Snatches

I am in the same boat. I just do the barbell snatches at less than my true 1 RM. The consequence for me dropping weights is loud noise and embarrassment, but nothing really gets hurt. Someday I'd like bumper plates so I can find my true 1 RM in so many lifts, but until then I'll keep doing what I'm doing. In over a year of lifting, I've only dropped weights twice (both from backsquat) and I've never injured myself due to a missed lift.

I live for this.

Everyone in the Coalition Forces Gym stopped their workout from the time I hung the rings until we finished Nasty Girls.

It was pretty cool.

I did drop the weights doing the Snatches but it was attempting a 20lb pr of 155lbs.

The guys that I workout with could not do snatches so I had them do some power snatches with overhead squat with 55lbs, then some overhead squat holds in the bottom position and finally some snatch grip high pulls.

Thanks for reading,

Marc
