Antibiotics & sport

Hey Guys

Just wondering if anyone is aware of any issues with competing/training when taking antibiotics?

Many thanks

Jaime

Re: Antibiotics & sport

No direct issues that I am aware of, but some antibiotics can upset your digestive system, which could prevent calorie/nutrient absorption and hinder you that way. I would research what you are specifically taking, and ask more than one doctor about your specific antibiotic.

Re: Antibiotics & sport

It's worth taking a probiotic as the medicine will clear out the good intestinal flora as well as the bad stuff.

Yes, there is a serious issue with fluoroquinolone antibiotics - ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, others. They are strongly linked to tendon rupture.

Re: Antibiotics & sport

How long post medication is the danger of tendon rupture? Just curious, and would be good info to know.

Re: Antibiotics & sport

If anything, it depends on what you are taking the antibiotics for. Is there a specific antibiotic you are asking about or are you just asking a general question?

Re: Antibiotics & sport

Thanks for the advice guys. The antibiotic is amoxicilin for a dental infection.
I will take probiotics now to counter the bad effects.

Thanks again

Jaime

Re: Antibiotics & sport

Other than the aforementioned need for probiotics, there aren't any exercise-related issues that I know of.

Re: Antibiotics & sport

Quinolones also tend to cause increased photosensitivity (i.e., you'll sunburn easier). Be careful with outdoor stuff if you're on one of those.
