Eating and Training Times Doing Shift Work

There are several threads about eating Zone while doing shift work, but not much otherwise and not a lot on optimal training times. I have received a promotion where I will soon begin shift work with the following schedule:

Week 1: MTWR: 1800-0600; FSS: Off
Week 2: MTW: 0600-1800; R: Off; FSS: 1800-0600
Week 3: MTW: Off; RFSS: 0600-1800
Week 4: Off
Week 5: MTWRF: 0800-1700

I currently eat Paleo (90-95%) and train after work (around 5pm each evening). Does anybody work a similar type shift, and if so, when do you typically eat and train?

Day shift will be pretty easy I believe, with meals around normal times and training after work in the PM. But with off days and night shifts I am struggling to devise a plan of attack. I am considering IFing, but I'm not sure if that is the right approach.

Any help is truly appreciated!

Re: Eating and Training Times Doing Shift Work

I did 9 years of nights over time, and before that a year of evenings shifts. I tried to eat and train when I could, usually after work briefly if I could handle it. I was never able to get a productive workout in before a shift when I did nights but I was able to before working and evening shift.

I was never able to get more than one REAL weight workout in during a stretch of 12s, I just did those on my off days.

That being said I was usually able to do some body weight stuff during my shift, pistols, pushups, pullups, walk or run the stairs. I also put in 3-5 miles of walking per shift as well

Re: Eating and Training Times Doing Shift Work

When I worked evenings and nights, I always worked out before shift. My body was never "hungry" even though I was asleep during the day. With that being said, I made myself eat during shift because I knew that my body needed the calories. I keep an ice chest full of food in my trunk and it helped alot being on perimeters or those long calls that we go on.

It may take a while, but your body will adjust.

Good Luck, stay safe...
