Re: DIY sandbags - which one out of these?
How many are you making? Just one for yourself or a whole bunch?
If just one, then you can buy a single, more expensive one. If you're making multiples, then you budge might demand you go cheaper.
How badly are you planning on abusing the bag? Are you going to slam it on asphalt?
Canvas is already pretty tough. You probably won't need the double weight canvas unless maybe if you're planning on throwing it off the roof and then down a flight of stairs.
How much weight do you plan on using?
Obviously, the bigger the bag, the more capacity. However, even the smallest bag on the site should probably hold a pretty formidable amount of weight.
How floppy do you want your bag?
Floppier is more unwieldy (perhaps more odd-object-like and therefore more functional?). An overstuffed bag may also be more prone to bursting. You'll want some amount of empty room in the bag, but consider the extreme: dealing with, say, only 30 pounds of sand inside a body bag would be pretty annoying.
For more help here, find some youtube videos of sandbag workouts. Take note out of how big the duffel is, how much sand is in their bag, and how floppy it is.
You probably don't need a huge bag (longer than 24") unless you're thinking about some serious weight.
Canvas is the standby. Make sure it's at least that tough.
Make sure the zipper is super tough.
You don't need anything fancy. You're going to want to cut off or tape down any straps anyway.
Consider top loading bags too.
