Hey all, I need some help with my L-pullups. When I go through the motion of the L-pullup my shoulders don't seem to rotate smoothly in the joint and I get some crunching noises here and there. I think I tend to rotate my body back a little during normal pullups so my chest points at the bar some and can't do that in the L position. Does anybody have any tips on initiating the movement? That seems to be where most of my pain is coming in.

For the most smooth motion and to keep your arms and shoulders positioned well you kinda need to push on the bar a little as you do the pullup. If you think about it your center of gravity will be shifted forward in the L. Now to pull up keeping your torso vertical you'll need to keep forward pressure on the bar as you pull up to counteract the torque being induced by your legs. Did that make sense?

Also, many people find that L-pullups are signficantly easier with an underhand grip, or (for me) a parallel grip . . . seems to change the dynamics back at the shoulder, for a more "natural" pulling motion.
