Which captains of crush gripper?

I am looking to get a gripper specifically to strenghen my grip for kettlebell lifting, and don't know which one to get. I am finally getting over a tendon injury in my hand and am anxious to get going on some serious training again, but this kind of makes me skeptical on what I could do at first.

These were my lifts prior to my hand injury:
Deadlift: 405 lb
Clean and Jerk: 205 lbs (never trained this one much, and my technique sucks)
2x24kg(52 lbs each) kettlebell long cycle clean and jerk: 85 reps in 10 minutes
2x32kg(70 lbs each) kettlebell long cycle clean and jerk: 28 reps
Pull-ups (with no kip): 23 (over 50 kipping)

Do you guys think I am strong enough to start with a #2 or should I get a #1 as well?

Re: Which captains of crush gripper?

From your numbers you seem pretty damn strong. But I personally would always recommend getting the 1 as even if you are too strong for it it can always be used for warmups. After an injury you are obviously going to have to go easy on them at first- major problem with grippers is that they are addictive. Alongside the grippers make sure you work the extensors (outside of your hand) using a bucket of sand, or rubber bands maybe. You might also want to get some kind of putty or dexterity balls for cooldowns and rehabilitive work.

I know guys who are also pretty strong who can't close a #1 COC. I don't think it has everything to do with how much you lift.

I would get a #1 because of what Andy said (warm-up). Also you can still use a #1 for a good workout even after you can close others above it (pinching weights on strings).

Re: Which captains of crush gripper?

The #1 is probably the best place to start. I tried a few out just recently, the #1 was tough, and the #2 I couldn't quite get. I also feel like I have halfway decent grip strength.

Good luck!

Brent I have a great resource for the grip strength. Richard sorin has closed a 3 more than once. he and his son own sorinex weight equipment and are real respected in the community! you can call him or e-mail him from his website. sorinex.com and he can tell you best how to train! GOOD LUCK AND LIVE STRONG!

Re: Which captains of crush gripper?

my friend has every one. i can barely close the trainer and i have very strong forearms, its really hard to get those last few milimeters for me. why not just get them all? theyre not THAT expensive and if you really want to train your grip its well worth having them all.

Re: Which captains of crush gripper?

COC is very specific.

I have similar numbers to you and the TRAINER is my 1RM on a good day.

The type of grip endurance fostered by Girevoy sport is only somewhat related to what you will get out of the COC grips (absolute strength in crushing).

Get the lightest one you can stand paying for!

I can double over about 350lbs, but I cannot close a number one.

Re: Which captains of crush gripper?

Wow, I do not feel too badly now. I can rep 30 reps on the trainer, and about 10 on the #1. I consider my grip weak, since I still need straps to Deadlift over 340ish.

Get the trainer, it's worth it for the higher rep work. Your forearms can take a beating and recover quickly, so you need to keep hitting them.

My .02 on COC Grippers...

I've got an S, T, 1 and 2 and they are invaluable training aids for any sport. I regularly bring them to KB workshops that I teach and have yet to find anyone who can close the 2 - and only a few people can come anywhere near closing the 1. The S and T are great for warm-ups and for clients who are starting to work on their hand strength.

I work with a lot of LE and Mil personnel and they are very enthusiastic about the grippers. A lot of my clients have them in their duty bag or stuck between the seats in their cruisers.

Hope this helps!
