I know it's still a month off but with Pat Tillman still on our minds maybe this is a good time to bring this up.

Every year since my college days I do a swim on Memorial Day in memory of my uncle, a SEAL who died in Viet Nam when I was just a pup. Hard to believe but this tradition has come to be very dear to me, every freezing, shivering minute of it.

Anyway I'd like to invite anyone interested to try some similar observation of Memorial Day, and share it here.

We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.
