Gassing Out!

For the past 3-4 months my cardio respiratory has been getting worse. I've had a lot of focus on strength during this period to improve my 1RMs and muscular endurance. But at the same time I've been gassing out very quickly in the WODs. Within a minute or two I'm fighting to breath, keep a tempo or even move. I really struggle with any cardio intense activity such as wall balls, burpees etc.

Anyone got any advice on what can I do to fix it?

Do more metcons...

Building 1Rm won't help with endurance. Doing that's that test ones endurance will help build endurance.

Lots of ways to do this

Metcons
OTMEM, OtMEOM
4-5 min heavy WODs

Provided your healthy, no medical issues, and properly fed/hydrated you should improve in endurance things as you do them

You may need to pay attention to your breathing. On things like wall balls, thrusters, burpees, if you concentrate on your inhale and exhale, you can get into a good rhythm, and this will help.

Maybe you can try building your effort through the metcon.

Say,if you are doing a 6min AMRAP, start with a very very easy intensity and increase it each minute. You probably will do yourself many more favors if you do 6 solid minutes of easier intensity than 2min hard + 4min easy.

It happens when you spend your time focusing on strength instead. It's hardly surprising that if you favour training for specific adaptations, that other adaptations would suffer somewhat. Especially if you happen to have put on some size.

As others mentioned breathing and guaging the level of intensity goes along way.

Take some huge breathers between movements, and make sure your breathing during the movement, you'll be suprised by the difference.

Ifs it a 15 min workout, dont attack it like a 2 min workout. Pick a level of intensity, and work up to an acceptable area, push that pace, and back off if needed.

Strength work and diminshed conditioning/cardio levels are to expected if you have spent the bulk of your time training in that realm.

I agree with the "do more metcons" recommendation. Also, start slow and ramp intensity through the workout. I've noticed sometimes that my body takes a bit to get into metcon mode. For example, on 5 RFT workouts round 3 is often the hardest for me but I'll "hit a groove" by the last couple.
