Starting For newcomers to the CrossFit methodology

Hi guys I need some advice, my wife had a kidney transplant 7yrs ago.Brenda is active as she does a lot of cardio but the anti rejection drugs she takes causes her to carry fat around her midsection. This is very deppressing for her as she tries very hard to keep the weight off by exercise and leading a clean life, I would like to get her started in a crossfit program.She is strong in the lower body but weak in the upper as she does not do any pullups. ANY help on training crossfit and nutrition would be welcome.I am just starting back crossfit myself after a bulging disc and a bad bout of sciatica.I have dumbells a chin dip tower, bands, heavy bag,wall ball,jumprope.

Richard, welcome back to CrossFit!
You've got quite a gal there, wanting to do what it takes!
My wife loves CrossFit,and has proceeded cautiously due to prior spinal surgery, knee surgery, and survivng cancer. She is a walking miracle! She is getting very strong though.
Just have Brenda scale down the WODs and not compare herself to others.
A lot of the battle is in the mindset and attitude after surgery.
Way to go!

A lot of people have found our scaling helpful in getting started.
One thing to add to what Frank said. A lot of good can come from CrossFit's random workouts and functional movements without the intensity. Scale the workouts back. Let your wife go through them at her own pace.

I'm still scaling after 5 months and it's still the best work out I've ever had! One word of caution: many of the members of this community are devotees of the Zone diet, and I've personally done well on it. However, kidney diets are VERY specialized. Have your wife follow her nephrologist's and nutritionist's advice, and have her follow the exercise advice at CF.

Hello Richard and welcome back to CF. I just want to say that I am, as always, inspired by the desire for people to strive through all manners of adversities be it physically, medically and or emotionally. And your wife is no exception. I admire her will and yours to work together on this program at whatever pace suits you for now. You and your wife are setting the example for those people who find it easier to complain and not do anything, rather its exercising or whatever. Hang in there and I hope that you and your wife’s recovery and CF training goes well. The nice thing is you both can support each other through this.

Excellent advise. I would suggest you encourage her to start with 3 rounds of the warm-up. The warm-up is a challenge to most, at the start.
