I know nothing about this area...never had to utilize them before. Couple of questions:

1. Which ones are solid?

2. Am I most likely going to have to pay for monthly hosting?

3. How do you compare? I don't understand what the difference in gb means or bandwidth

4. Will a free host be sufficient for an affiliate blog site?

I strongly encourage paying for hosting. Even if it's only a little ($5-$20/month). If it's free they are making their money somewhere (most likely running adds on your site).

Look at stability and a knowledgable tech team not features. You need webspace, probably a building tool unless you have Dreamweaver or know what you're doing, email so you can run email under your domain. Most of the features that hosts tout you won't use. Focus on stability and the service. Providing hosting is easy so there's a ton of folks who do it, many do it very poorly.

I'm using typepad like a lot of the other affiliates. It took me a little bit to figure out exactly how to navigate the system, but it is really easy once you figure it out. I also use fuse mail for my email. I've only been with them for about a month, so I can't give you a great review. I used their domain name service also so that threw me for a loop when I had to configure the DNS links and all of that stuff. So far, their support team has been quick to answer and help me set up the account. It's about $5 a month.

Roger seems to know way more than I do about this subject though.

More money than you need to pay, Randy.

Why don't you tell us a little about what your needs are? That would better guide a recommendation.
