squatting with arthritic knee and bone spur

My mom (age 52, 5"1", 195 lbs.) started CrossFit at a local affiliate a few weeks ago to lose weight. Unfortunately, she tried to work through a knee injury which today was diagnosed as arthritis and a large bone spur. Not surprisingly, the doctor told her to stop squatting/rowing permanently if she wants to save her knee.

Does this seem reasonable for someone with her age, weight and medical problems? I'd like to see her continue CrossFit when she is able, so I was hoping some of the smart people on this board could offer their input. Thanks for replies.

Re: squatting with arthritic knee and bone spur

Joints do wear down over the years especially if you were athletic and/or weight a lot for your size. So... it's kinda reasonable.

Not much you can do about arthritis unfortunately except control it (diet tends to play a pretty big factor in some cases) although it SHOULD be possible to get some activity. But realize that it might speed up a possible knee replacement.

If she loses the weight it will be easier on the joints obviously. Stay light on the leg work and see if you can find stuff that doesn't hurt. Upper body and flexibility work are a good shot as well.

Re: squatting with arthritic knee and bone spur

Thanks Steven, I hadn't considered diet as a factor and I'll definitely make sure she does upper body work.

Can anyone attest to working through arthritis and/or losing weight with knee problems?
