CrossFit Road Trip

Ok, so my 2 buddies and I are going to do a road trip for our Spring Break, that's nothing crazy, but our idea is to hit up as many CF gyms as we can and see some cool stuff, meet some cool people, and get out there. I have a tentative plan, but wanted to see if anyone out there had any insights on this.

I'm sure I'm not the first to try this, so anyone with experience, tips, advice, lessons learned, etc.. please feel share if you have them or if you know someone who has done this, please shoot me a link/contact info.

Things I have planned for:

-A reliable, fuel efficient car that can hold us and our gear
-CrossFit gym destinations
-Route planning
-Scheduling visits to the gyms- class times, drop in rates, etc...
-Places to stay (Friends and family along the way, no hotels!)
-Contact info (email and preferably phone too) for each gym
-Actually contacting each affiliate to let them know we're coming, special considerations, etc...
-Packing plenty of paleo friendly snacks for the road- nuts, seeds, fruit, vegetables, jerky.
-Budgeting- gas, food, drop in fees, t-shirts, misc...

Besides visiting CF gyms and friends and family along the way, our only other planned stop is a day hike in the Smoky Mountains.

My current plan has us doing the following:

M: Affiliate in the morning and evening
Tu: Affiliate in the morning, day hike
We: Affiliate in the morning and evening
Th: Affiliate in the morning and evening
F: Affiliate in the morning

I know this is a ridiculous amount of volume. I think we can do it though. We'll be sure and pig out, and sure our performance will suffer, but I want to maximize time usage- our goal is to meet as many people as possible in the time we have. We're all 20-22 years old college students. We do 6-8 WODs/week plus normal college activities (intramural sports, etc...). We do some SealFit programming too so mental grind and recovery are not something we are unaccustomed to.

Any glaring omissions in my planning? Thanks in advance!

What's your route? Give me a shout at crossfit.fortmeade@gmail.com if it takes you through central Maryland.

Re: CrossFit Road Trip

Our route currently takes us roughly: Terre Haute, IN-Lexington, KY-Knoxville, TN-Atlanta, GA-Huntsville, AL, Clarksville, TN-Evansville, IN. Stops were chosen based on places to stay (we're not staying in any hotels, just with family and friends along the way) and CF gyms I'm kind of familiar with/have heard of. Thanks for the offer Casey. Due to the Needs Of The Army, I have an 11 month vacation between graduation and my report date for BOLC, so I may definitely be doing this again, if so I will look into passing thru the east coast.

I'm glad I'm not the only CF nerd who thinks this sounds like an awesome idea.

Re: CrossFit Road Trip

My wife and I plan vacations around affiliates. It's awesome. If you have a home affiliate, let them know where you're going, sometimes the owners like to chat a bit. If you can swing bringing a T-shirt for each affiliate you visit, it's appreciated, but not mandatory. Most places I've visited let me work out for free, or for the price of a T-shirt. A few have charged like $10-15 for a WOD, which is still cheaper than a drop in at a globo. You really get to see some neat places and great people as well. It rocks to see how other places work, and what they do with their spaces. If you ever make it to West Palm Beach, look up BGI Fitness, we'd love to see you there.

Re: CrossFit Road Trip

I'll be at Ft. Meade thru the summer and I planned on hitting up as many affiliates as I can on the weekends. I think what you're doing is a great idea. I was thinking about taking some leave and doing the same thing throughout Europe.

Re: CrossFit Road Trip

If you happen to swing through Tuscaloosa, AL (University of Alabama) you can knock out two affiliates in a day probly. I have a parking space, a semi-comfortable couch and floor space if your interested. And I know a good buddy who went to sectionals last weekend who lives in downtown ATL, along with my girlfriend.
