Overhead Squat Pain in Back

So been crossfitting for a few months, having trouble with getting deep in my overhead squats. Basically my hips are tight I assume and really working on my flexabilty to fix that. However, when I do my OHS's or Wall Squats my mid back gets real sore, not a something is wrong pain, but more of a working real hard sore. Basically I am wondering if this is due to tight hips/legs/back. If so does anyone have any suggestions to how on getting these areas loser. I am trying to do as much stretching as I can, reg, PNF, rolling on balls, etc. Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

Re: Overhead Squat Pain in Back

It's hard to say without actually seeing your squat, but soreness in the mid to upper back (particularly if it's being caused by wall squats) leads me to believe that your having to work extra hard to keep your chest open. You may have some issues with tightness in the hips/hamstrings, but it also sounds like you may also have some issues with tight pecs.

Re: Overhead Squat Pain in Back

your trap and upper back hold and stabilize that weight overhead. its perfectly normal, and likely means you're doing it right, or at least in the right direction.
