I live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.
I am 37 years old, an architect, father of two. 5'-11", 214 lbs (last weigh-in more than a month ago). Because I crave humiliation, here's a crappy phonecam pic from that time: http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/20/46097.jpg bigger I just started running after a long hiatus (years) and have been managing 2 or 3 4-6k runs per week. Usually 3. I like running, but it also happens to be the simplest thing to dive into. Also, because I run when I would normally be walking the dog, it doesn't take any time out of my day. I was only pointed to the site a week or so ago, and I have been reading a bit. But there's a lot more material for me to browse. If there's anything I am looking for, I think it would be weight-free workouts -- anything you kind folks could show me in that vein would be appreciated. |

Although I'd suggest getting *some* weights just for some exercises. You can do a lot without though. |

Welcome, Matthew!
I've doled out a bit of advice to the newbies over the last few months, and I think I've finally distilled it down to the golden nugget: Read the new posts here every day and in no time flat you'll be the one giving out the newbie advice. Jump right in, be adaptable, learn all you can, and you'll never look back! |

Hi Matthew,
Welcome to the site. I too live in Dartmouth (live just down Waverley road near Shubie Park - about 5 minutes from you) and have been doing Crossfit for a little more than a year. You are going to love it. There are a few of us around town that do Crossfit so feel free to contact us if you need advice starting (I still consider myself very much the novice at Crossfit). This board, and its members, is the most incredible source of advice and support you are going to find anywhere online. Make sure that you read the FAQs and don't be hesitant to try the search function first if you have a question - many common questions have been answered very thoroughly in the recent past. Again, welcome, Sam |

And did Sam mention the great home gym he has? :>
Hope all is well Sam. Finally got a shift partner so should be back at it soon. Mike |

Mike,
You should see my gym now - it gets better every month (someday I will catch up to Eugene... in maybe 200 years). Sam |

Re: Noob in Nova Scotia
Hi Guys!
I have yet to do workout of the day. I am still going for 5k runs (4.6k actually) 3x a week and I am finishing up a series of physiotherapy sessions at One to One Wellness. It is some of that "Super Slow" stuff. Heavy weights, sl-o-o-o-w reps for 2 or 2.5 minutes. It was recommended to me by someone I trust, and because it is physio my work benefits cover it. Once I am done with that, I will start at Nubody's with a work colleague. I know health clubs aren't exactly the done thing here at Crossfit, but my buddy here at work has been going on the regular and I know that for me nothing beats the motivation of working our with a buddy. In any case I have referral pass, so I'll check it out for a week. I hope it does work for me, because there's no way I can set up a home gym. (no garage, basement ceiling 5'-6", house in midst of renovations, etc.). I printed off the FAQ for reading on the ferry! |

Re: Noob in Nova Scotia
Not a lot of info on that site!
![]() Can I just email the dude asking for workout routines? That seems a tad presumptuous! What does "WS/FS" stand for? |
