Should you be able to Clean more than you Split Jerk ? or vice versa ?

Basically just wondering what is the limiting factor for most people for their clean and jerk ? Is it the clean or the jerk ?

I haven't actually started training the jerk on it's own, but i do have a power rack so i will start doing that.

Compared to my clean, i actually find the split jerk quite easy. This may sound really silly but i have trained in various martial arts my whole life. The first martial art i ever did was shotokan karate. The landing position of the split jerk is almost exactly like a traditional shotokan karate stance so that side of things is coming quite naturally for me.

My clean on the other hand needs some work.

I could always clean more than I could jerk.

I have a friend on the other hand who could jerk quite a bit more than he could clean. His clean was like 275 or 280 and he could jerk 305.

I think if you're really proficient and confident in the jerk this is not unreasonable because the transition under the bar is much faster than in the clean.

It goes back and forth with people. Some depends on the style of jerk, and others how athletic they are with the different movements. Personally, usually I can jerk anything I can clean/stand-up with. So my limiting factor is leg strength (always has been). I usually do better when I start cleaning more, though (higher volume).

As to your split position being similar to karate stance, make sure your back foot is not flat, but you're raised up on the ball of the foot and the knee is pointing mostly forward, maybe slightly inward.

The max weight for the clean and the jerk should not be far apart. Among top lifters it's about 50/50 as to which is going to be the limiting lift.

Anyone else see the video of Talayna Fortunado split jerking 235 yesterday? I think she's gonna give Annie a serious run for her money this year.

My jerk is 15# more than my clean. I've always been better at overhead movements than squat movements though.

I used to always fail on the jerk on C&J, and worked my jerk a ton, now in the last 6 months I've gotten so much more confident in my jerk, that I feel as though if I can clean it, I will jerk it no problem.

Could just come down to whether you're a pusher or a puller. If your pulling muscles are stronger, you'll clean more and vice versa.
