Healthy weight vs. Doctors recommendations?

First off I know that I need to lose some weight. The question is how much, should I just work out and eat right until my body settles into a weight that it is happy with. Should I go with my doctors advice or is there an average weight for my height that I should shoot for as a starting point?

I am 5'10" and currently at 220lbs. (down from 242lbs.)
My doctor says at my height I should weigh between 145lbs and 155lbs.
(I feel like I would be nothing but skin and bone if I was that light.)

I think you would be manorexic at that "recommended" weight. At your height, hovering around 200lbs would be good for you. Do you happen to know anything about your body composition?

I used one of those hand held electronic body fat scanners at work. It says I'm 26% fat. and I realize that is too high, but I only started working out 2 weeks ago. I've been "dieting" for a month.

What does "dieting" mean? Paleo? Zone? Low carb?

Do 'Fran' in 3 minutes...then weigh yourself. That's your ideal weight. ;-)

Bioelectrical impedance? That's somewhat accurate, I forget the margin of error with those, but nonetheless, that is relatively high. If you can get the BF lower (say the mid-teens) that would be healthier for you.

It depends quite a bit on your body type, but I'm thinking that would be a ridiculously low weight for someone 5'10" if you're athletic.

I'm around 5'11" and was 210lbs when I started crossfit. When I'm around 185-190 it seems like a good weight. Down around 180 I started getting comments about getting too thin. I believe that for someone 5'10" who lifts weights and works out hard (as opposed to a marathon runner) they would be good at 180-185lbs. Maybe up to 200lbs or more if you're jacked, or a strongman type.

You definitely want lower bodyfat though...in the mid-teens like stated above. At 19% I still had a decent beer gut.

"dieting" in this case means that I was eating approximately 1000 calories a day 40% protein 40% carbs and 20% fat. I don't know if there is a name for this type of diet.
I had never heard of paleo or zone until a few weeks ago.


And I think Jason has had the most correct answer so far what ever a person weighs after a 3min Fran would have to be a good weight for them. (Not all that helpful at the moment but correct none the less.)

Those "healthy weight" values usually come off the BMI charts, which are worthless. If you've got low BP, a low resting heart rate, and a good lipid profile, your doctor isn't going to be all that concerned about your weight. You'll get those things by getting fit and fixing your diet.

With that said, yeah, 26% bf is too high. Men generally want to be somewhere in the low to mid-teens. What that means for total weight depends on how much muscle you're carrying around.

Most doctors base ideal BW on the BMI, and sure enough the weight he gave you brackets right in the middle of supposed BMI healthy range.

Nevermind that recent studies indicate the overweight range of the BMI is actually correlated with increased life span.

Anyways BMI is metric that is of no real importance to an athlete. Body composition is, if your body comp is between 12-15 your healthy if you 8-12 your pretty much ideal athletically, Bio-impedance tests are useless. Below 8 percent is usually difficult to maintain for most people and has not been shown to have any performance benefits.

Based on comparing the BMI's of elite sprinters and gymnasts it looks to me like a health male with 10-12 percent BF at 5^10 should weight 175-200 pounds to have a decent muscle base.
