Should you have a wide grip for OHS (like the snatch), or is the grip closer to a push-press (a little more than shoulder width or there-abouts?)
I've been playing around with the grip width on OHS and suddenly realized I wasn't even sure which was proper/better. |

I think either are valid. If I am using a Bar, I will use a snatch grip, but if dumbbells I use more shoulder width, although as you pull your shoulders back your grip naturally widens.

As Jeramiah mentioned, OHS with dumbells are normally done shoulder width.
There was a discussion about OHS some time last week. click here: http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/22/26644.html and there is a photo of Greg Everett doing an overhead squat with dumbells, and perfect positioning. When using a barbell, the OHS is traditionally done with the snatch grip. in O-lifting training, we take the bar off of the racks, with the snatch grip, do a snatch push press, then do the overhead squats. Not only is this done as a core strengthening exercise, but to get you strong in your overhead position for the snatch- thus the importance of keeping your overhead position the same as it would be if you were snatching. |

Thanks, those pics of Greg with the DBOHS (yikes) were very helpful.
Got a video of that snatch push press? :-) |

I think I've stumbled across it before, but can't seem to find it right now. Does anyone have a link to a page(s) on different grips for the different lifts? Not only how the hands are gripping the bar, but the spacing. On one lift I think you want the hands spaced so that with arms hanging, the bar crosses your body just above the crotch. I don't recall if this was for deadlifts, or clean and jerk, or what exactly. Thanks in advance.
