is there a proper width to place the paralets, or does it depend on the exercise, size etc.?

For me, it depends on the exercise. I keep them a little closer for L-sits - just outside my butt cheeks. For HSPUs and handstand work, I set them the same distance I would use for floor work - just outside my feet. For regular pushups you can experiment and do some close in a little further than shoulder width - any further than that and I get a nasty twinge in my shoulder.

A decent basis is where gymnasts start at. Approx the distance from your elboe to your fingertips. Beyond that it's a little adjustment for feel, but that will give you a good start point.
