Numb pinkies

I've noticed the past few days that my pinkies are getting a bit numb...not painful or twingy or shocky, just a constant low-level tingling and lack of sensation, primarily along the outside of the pinkies.

I biked a metric century last weekend and towards the end my hands would tend to get numb, so I suspect that's the biggest culprit. Can anyone recommend any stretches or other therapy to restore whatever nerve tightness I have going on here?

Re: Numb pinkies

I have had similar problems caused by a compressed ulnar nerve in my elbow (not from biking though). The nerve runs through the meaty part of the outside of the palm and I've come accross some online discussions from bikers who have had similar problems from gripping the handlebars for extended periods of time. I can't remember where I read these forums, but I believe their symptoms went away after a couple of weeks. They also suggested wearing padded gloves while biking, but I believe the best suggestion was rest (as in not gripping handlebars tightly for a little while) as the compression of the nerve in the palm from the gripping caused some inflamation of the nerve. Hopefully this helps and can help you narrow down your searches for a better qualified answer!
