Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

Eugene, I'd like to change mine to 20.
I'm following this procedure on how to increase pullups. Can't wait to see if this works. Have you or anyone tried this or anything like this? I guess this is GTG stuff. The term is new to me but its exactly the only way we learned things in gymnastics, constant, constant repititions but not as organized as this is laid out!

It's the Recon Ron pullup program in the fitness archives, dated 1-18-05. (Sorry if someone already mentioned it and I missed it on this thread.)

Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

Here's what I have so far and you will note that I am missing a lot of ages for the results page. Lots of folks interested in doing this.

Gina, 20...wow. Not a very many women can lay claim to that many pullups. Well done. Greasing the Groove will get you there for sure. Sum maximal efforts many times through the day. Volume. You need neurological adaptaions as well as muscular strength/endurance games for this kind of effort. What muscles to fire and relax in what sequence, how to time your effort, how tightly to grip the bar, how to breathe, and how to fire that kip at just the right time to float you up over the bar. I'm not familiar with the Recon Ron progression specifically but whatever you do to up your volume is what needs to happen. Do only as many as you can without smoking yourself and if that is 6 or 7 at a time, no problem. Knock out that many and then do something else for a bit. Do a bunch of sets of that throughout the day working on perfecting your kip. Make pullups your friends and do them so often you get into a perfect groove such that every single pullup looks the same as the first one and the last one you do. To stave off boredom change grips, use a towel, put one hand lower than the other, do them on rocks, ledges, rings whatever you can find. Just do them a lot.

Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

Eugene, Yeah, I'm doing pretty much just that: 7,6,5,4,4 for 2 weeks before advancing to the next level of starting w/ 8 and so on. It doesn't say how many times per day this should be done but I'll take your advice and try to pump out 3 sets of the above mentioned per day. Actually this program is meant to be done over a 6 month period of time and practically guarantees the goal of 20. I'll be happy for whatever I can get by the time your bday comes though, so maybe my goal of 20 is a bit premature now that I'm really thinking about it. Either way, this is so motivating !

Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

A couple more from CrossFit Rockwall:

JJ Quisenberry (age: 28) 25 pull-ups
Adam Thies (age: 28) 30 pull-ups

That's all of us! If anyone else jumps on the CrossFit wagon before then, we'll make them do it too!

Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

Aaron - yes, absolutely, chalk is on the go list. The no-go list is stuff like wraps, hooks or other things that physically hold you onto the bar.

I'll try to do 40. I'm 26 years-old.

Previous PR is 21.

Re: Eugene Allen's Birthday Pullup Challenge

I've got the kip down now. Pull-ups are much easier done that way. Heck, they're even kind of fun. Kind of like bouncing on a trampoline.
