Lower back injury - possibly from deadlift... first back problem

Dear Crossfitters,
I've been following the WODs religiously since October of 2009. This is my first 'injury' and resulted in the first WOD I was unable to complete. I am 25 years old, 5'8", 175lbs.

I lifted my max on deadlift recently (355), and then a couple of days later started the 225lb deadlift/pullup WOD. I don't know what happened, but I went to warm up with 135lbs and just prior to full hip extension on the first warmup deadlift I felt a pain in my right lower back. I continued to warmup, and then began the WOD. With each deadlift I felt the pain just prior to full hip extension (ie. body straight) and then as I straightened out it went away. There is no pop, but definitely a shooting type pain. I stopped the WOD after the first round because it was painful enough and I was very worried about it. I have never had an injury in crossfit, and I have never had a back injury period.

It has been two days and I continue to have the pain. It is worst in the morning. I can get it when bending over and coming back to an upright position, just like the deadlift. I have taken an anti-inflammatory and it has helped.

I know one of the biggest responses will be "go see a specialist".

Unfortunately, I'm deployed and in the Army - and the medical center here leaves much to be desired. I know to be able to see a specialist would be near impossible... and for most soldiers it is too late by the time they do. My question is this... does this sound serious, or like something that rest, meds and a good rehabilitation program would fix? what course of action would you recommend?

I would like to continue to work out, but if it would be detrimental I won't. Also, I wear body-armor for 3-8 hours every day. So, rest as I'm sure it would be Rx'd would not be possible.

pretty telling signs of a disc injury.

Obviously, yes, go see a specialist. It's serious, but you can rehab it with the right help

If you REALLY can't find anyone, then do your best to avoid flexion until you can.

I had a lower back injury about 2-3 years ago. I could barely bend over and it turned out to be a bulging disc. I had to go to physical therapy for about 6 months. I have to be extremely careful with deadlifts. Trying icing your back, that really helped me and if you have a foam roller, that can help too.

Someone should keep a tally of the number of disk injury symptoms threads posted weekly on the Crossfit boards.

David - only do what feels GOOD for your back. Avoid flexion. Go for extension. Stop weighted DLs until you can do the movement - weight-free, just the movement - with absolutely no pain.

If this is a disk issue, you don't want to squish the disk out of place even further, so be gentle. Pay attention to what hurts and what feels good (and not "oh, ow, it burns so good" good, but actually, "aah, there's some relief there" good and do more of the second category.

It's called going for time instead of going for perfect form....

These exercises may help for now:


Like said above.. if they help keep doing. If they hurt eliminate them.
