Wrist Injury - Seeking Advice

Hi all,

A little over 2 weeks ago our box was doing 2-2-...-2 front squat work, and during the last set got 1 rep, then failed on the 2nd rep attempt (I dropped the bar at the bottom of the squat movement... didn't get any upward movement much or at all). My "dismount" was bad, as I felt a definite tweak of my right wrist immediately.

For about a week after I felt a lot of soreness/tightness in the base of my palm as well as the webbed/meaty part between thumb and pointer. This has mostly subsided or gone away.

Currently, the pain is only when the wrist is flexed backward AND there is pressure/weight that is pressing on the area where everyone's callouses form. The pain seems to be centered on the back and base of wrist.

Oddly, I can bend my wrist back by pulling my fingers without any pain at all. Also, movements where the pressure is on the base of the palm (pushups) cause much less or no pain. Range of motion is fine, wrist can rotate back/forth/around without pain.

The movements that bring about pain are things such as: power cleans, clean and jerks (transitioning the bar from rack to over head) and to a lesser extent snatches (at the top of the movement where I'm catching the bar).

Movements that seem fine are: pushups (closed fist is 100% fine), pullups, deadlifts, double unders, kb swings.

Got an x-ray done 12 days into injury, which came back negative for fractures/broken bones.

Any thoughts or advice? Is this a tendon injury? Any input appreciated!

Re: Wrist Injury - Seeking Advice

I did the exact same thing doing the exact same workout. Mine is my left wrist instead of my right but my pain is in the exact same place. I did hear mine pop but no swelling so I haven't seen a Dr. but am frustrated with not being able to do WOD's at full strength. It didn't look like you had any responses, have you figured anything out yet? Would love to know. Thanks and good luck

Re: Wrist Injury - Seeking Advice

My best guess would be a sprain. I did the same thing except I hurt my thumbs rather than my wrist and the only thing that made it better was regular ice and rest. I basically iced it every day and avoided any movements that hurt it for a few weeks and I am all better.

I had the most issues with cleans and pressing overhead and could do all the movements you can do as well so it sounds pretty similar to what I had.

Re: Wrist Injury - Seeking Advice

I know this thread is a few months old but I have a similar injury and was wondering how long before you were able to heavy cleans again?

I hurt myself at the end of January while I was doing heavy 1's w/ cleans. As I got to my max, I guess I didn't get it into the rack position correctly because it slipped and my right wrist took the brunt of it. Funny thing is that there was no swelling. Couldn't make a fist the first few days but after the first week and a half the actual pain in my wrist was gone and I could rotate it in every direction. Now the pain remains in the palm area. Right in between my thumb and index finger. That area in the middle, when I put pressure on it, hurts. Especially the area right below the index finger segment; when I push back on it, it really hurts. It'll be 3 weeks next Monday and since I've never sustained this type of injury I was wondering what other's experiences were and how long recovery was before you were back to doing heavy cleans.

Thanks

Re: Wrist Injury - Seeking Advice

If you have wrist pain, especially on the thumb side, that doesn't get better after a weak of mobility/ice/whatever-else-have-you then I would suggest seeing a wrist/hand specialist

I don't actually have anymore pain in the wrist. It's just in the palm of my hand now.

I was mainly talking to the OP.

Would still consider getting it checked out if it hasn't improved after 3 weeks.

Does soft tissue work help at all?
