The mods thought he was "flaming" everyone, when in reality he was one of the most helpful and knowledgable posters. But whatevski, their loss.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Rick Scarpulla came down to our box, Reebok CrossFit PTY in the Republic of Panama, two weeks ago and we had an awesome weekend.

Rick helped us realize that even though we push to what we consider our limits, we are still within our comfort zone and we wont excell at Regionals or at this sport for very long if the mindset is not right.

He also helped us identify that our group was missing strength, and that without strength, any podium would be farther and farther. He showed us techniques and alternatives to get our minds ready for more weight in the classic powerlifting moves, but also showed us tons of drills and complementary band and kb work that can help make us stronger, more balanced and coordinated, etc.

Our coaches loved the 10 minute metcon with men holding a 45lb plate and girls a 25. It reminded us of how easy it is to get a cool and challenging workout for 30 people without having to get all tricky with gadgets, even with limited space. We certainly felt our triceps for the next couple of days.

After 2 days of a lot of load, energy and very entertaining and motivational talks, we ended with a little bit of his infamous warrior training that quickly separated the fitness enthusiasts from the aspiring competitors. He often mentioned both were ok, but if you considered yourself or had aspirations to compete, you had to make that difference very clear in your ability to push through pain.

Very cool seminar, we were not bored a single minute of the two day 8 to 5 seminar, and we recommend it to anyone, wether it be to learn powerlifting principles and supporting exercises, for competitors to learn to push through, to learn sound and sustainable programming, for motivation and mindset, or simply for variety and fun to the box´s community.

Check out a great new article on some shoulder prehab by Rick:

Use Kettlebells to Prevent Shoulder Injuries (wfs)

I think everybody could benefit from including these into their weekly routine. I know we sure have!

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

It's been awhile, so here's another update on the latest at Ultimate Advantage.
My numbers continue to climb...while my weight continues to go down! When I first decided to focus more attention on my diet, I was concerned that my lifts would drop off, but they haven't, and that's certainly a credit to Rick and his program. There's talk of me entering a meet in January (my first!), and I'm excited to see where I stand in comparison to others. My soccer is going well - was able to play hard for two hours today and still feel good, not tired or sore.
In other UA news, our college athletes had tremendous seasons. One of our freshman was named rookie of the year by her conference. Our other freshman all received great amounts of playing time, which is an accomplishment in itself. Our high school fall athletes had great seasons, and now we are gearing up to get our winter athletes going. We've got a couple new guys who have been working with us for the past few months to prep for basketball, and I'm excited to see what they do this season.
So what is everyone else doing? How's Rick's program working for you guys?

Got bored with programming for myself so I have Rick coaching me now. It's been awesome so far. I'm hoping to take a trip up to UA early next year.

Rick's always coming out with great informative articles as well as a newsletter!

Check out his latest newsletter HERE (WFS)

He did an interview with Westside Barbell lifter Josh Conley, a Q&A with me about my gym, and he also included a day in the lift of a West Point powerlifting assistant team captain.
