Issue with my cleans

The issue with my catch is that i can not comfortably catch on my shoulders with my elbows up, The are usually directly underneath the bar with it in my palms instead of my finger tips. I can only assume this is a stretching issue. Any stretches/activities/advice you can suggest to assist me with my problem.

Thanks in advance!!
Eric

Re: Issue with my cleans

Practice front squats with proper elbow positioning and form, and then you will start catching your cleans the same way.

Re: Issue with my cleans

I had this problem and there may be a flexibility issue but perhaps not.

I found that my wrists were flexible enough (as Lincoln says, if your wrist can bend 90 degrees, that is sufficient), my shoulders less so. But I seem to have long forearm bones so I need a wider grip. That has made it easier to rack. In fact, look at Aimee Anaya...she has a pretty wide grip. I was trying to use a deadlift grip and it just didn't work.

So, I'm now making a little progress working through Greg's progressions (currently have trouble timing the catch and the foot stomp). But at least the bar is landing on my shoulders now.

It may not be your problem, but it's something to think about.

Re: Issue with my cleans

Check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NRmdtSvmQQ (WFS). Boris talks about the clean grip and ways to improve it, noting that it can take 4-6 weeks fo work to get comfortable with it. I'm still working on mine (about 6 weeks now) but it is much improved and not uncomfortable anymore.

Re: Issue with my cleans

Hey guys!

Iv been training front squats this week, pretty light to just get the grip correct.

It is really helping with flexibility, and the video was excellent!!

Been performing wrist stretches as well.

This is really helping!!! besides a little wrist pain I'm coming around.

Thanks again,
Eric

Re: Issue with my cleans

Eric,

As part of the starting strength program, I was doing cleans once every three days, and after a month of solid work I noticed my flexibility seemed to take care of itself. It may just be a practice issue more than anything else.

Re: Issue with my cleans

This is a problem for me, too. It affects thrusters, front squats, cleans, etc. I need to get this rack position thing down.

Good video. If anyone else has some pointers or something, please post them!

Re: Issue with my cleans

Something of an aside...do most people rack thrusters or just hold the bar?

I've always just held it (like for fran)?!?

You are supposed to rack it from what I've seen. I have the same flexibility problem so I can't but would love to be able to. Would be nice to be able to support the weight on the shoulders while doing Fran (thrusters) to avoid getting fatigued as quickly.
Thanks for the video link!
