What type of pipe for a pull up bar?

What type of steel should I use for my home gym pull up bar? I know that gas pipe is sch40 and I've installed hydo line thats sch60 in government contracting but regular steel like the type used in fire sprinklers is only a sch20 or less. I weigh 250 and the span is 4'7" so any of you pros got advice on this? Thanks for ant help!

Jason

I wouldn't say I'm a pro, but I can't imagine someone needing over a sch 40.

Re: What type of pipe for a pull up bar?

Well, I'm not a pro but I have built one pullup bar out in the garage and one out in my backyard. I originally tried a 3/4" galvanized pipe from home depot in the backyard between two posts roughly 5ft apart, but it flexed too much. I went back and got a 1" pipe and it seems to work just fine. I'm around 200-210lbs, but it holds me for weighted pullups so I think it'd be ok for you.

Re: What type of pipe for a pull up bar?

Thanks for the advise. I'll give the 1" a shot if I cant find the sch40 3/4 at the home depot.

I was hoping one of the rogue guys or other makers would post and say what type of steel they use for their cages or pull up bars. Does anyone know? My search has come up blank.

Thanks Jason

Jason - I would recommend that you use at least 1" Sch40 pipe. 3/4" diameter will feel too small in your hands and it may flex at the span you mentioned. You may even want to opt for 1-1/4" pipe. Hope that helps...

Re: What type of pipe for a pull up bar?

I used 1" black pipe for my setup. I do alot of weighted pullups and it holds up fine. I kept the ends open so I can hang stuff off of it easier.

Do you know the distance between the pull-up bar and the ceiliing? I have a 11' ceiling in my garage and need to drop 24-30", not sure if this will cause too much flex?
