Garage Gym vs. Indoor Gym
I've been working out in a 12 x12 room in my basement and finally purchased some bumper plates, but now the plates are hitting the ceiling when I do any overhead movements. I'm trying to get some advise/opinions on whether I should just use smaller plates when I do overhead movements or move my stuff to the garage where I have about the same 12 x 12 area to work with, but have 10' ceilings? It's also hard to do proper pull ups on my squat cage as my my head will hit the ceiling if I try to get my chin over the bar and wall balls are not very productive with a 7.5' ceiling. I'm sure everyone is going to say suck it up and move my stuff to the garage despite the cold in the winter and heat in the summer.

Suck it up and move your stuff to the garage. You are so limited with a lot of exercises when you cannot lift, throw, swing stuff over your head. Jumping rope, wall ball, oly lifts, box jumps to name just a few. It will be well worth the initial hassle.

Re: Garage Gym vs. Indoor Gym
I say move it to the garage, fo sho. I workout in my apt living room with 9 foot ceilings and although I "can do" everything I need, I would love to have the space and ceiling height that a garage would provide. Part of working out is getting hot, sweaty, killing yourself, and what better place to do that than a garage. Plus have you ever seen a dirty a/c filter. Just the thought of inhaling all the dust and debris makes me nauseous sometimes. The fresh air would be great.

We all agree! Team high five!
![]() And be happy that you're not so tall that even the garage is too short. |
