the real reason you should not use it is it will make you lean more at the start ..

it changes your centre of gravity..

bigger towel, pad bigger change

screws up the basic mechanics, stresses lower back more etc etc

apart from that, it is so lame, it would be embarrassing to be seen doing it

and if you don't use it you get neat callouses on your back as well as your hands..

I use to when I started lifting many years ago, but now I don't. I feel like the bar could roll off my back if I use the pad... Plus it's unstable.

You'll get used to squatting without.

It's very helpful for barbell hip thrusts though.

What are barbell hp thrusts?

They're awesome for glute ham development. Most guys I know refuse to do them due to the embarrassment factor, though.

Yeah I could see that, can also see why you would want the pad if your a guy.
