Barbell pad for back squats, who does and doesnt

Just thought I would ask who uses a barbell pad for their back squats. I was using one but now I've gone bar naked , squating 116 kgs (255#). Definately feel the weight more on the traps, have to get use to it i spose.

Also does anyone think it's an advantage to have one to lift more weight?

I don't think you'll find any people on here who use a pad for squats.

i think if you need a pad or something you're doing it wrong. it shouldn't hurt if the bar is placed correctly.

but to answer the question i don't use the pad.

Agreed. I used to think I needed a pad when I first started squatting, when in reality I was just placing the bar in the wrong position. Assuming your doing a high-bar squat as you referenced your traps, try switching to low bar and see if that feels any better. Keeping your elbows back can also help to position the bar correctly.

I think using the pad is a disadvantage. You're better served by learning correct bar placement and getting acclimated to the heavy weight on your back.

The problem with the pad is that because it's soft and cushy, and because the bar can move around inside it, the barbell is now less-stable than if it's on your back, and instability from any source is the bane of heavy squatting.

I'd recommend cutting the pad in half so you have two pieces and for a change of pace put them on the barbell to create a thick grip for presses, curls or rows. Go light when you start. This is the best use I can think of for a squat pad.

You train in order to get strong.

Sometimes it hurts.

Everyone I know refers to that pad as the "***** pad", and for good reason.

If it really hurts that much, try incorporating a lot more rows and sumo deadlift high pulls into your program to build up your trapezius.
