This is what makes me not care if I ever have a 6-pack. Most women I meet like shoulders, chest and in some cases arms. My wife loves shoulders more than anything.
Hell she has a super crush on Dwight Howard just because of his gigantic shoulders. She said "I'd like to take his shoulders and put them on your body." I told her I'd look like a mutant because I'm not 7 feet tall.

Bicep curls are most effective...

when done in the squat rack!

Jamie-
You know I'm joking. I love squats probably more than anyone I know!

PS: my gym aced its squat rack about 2+ years ago... we just use squat stands now.

Yeah, shoulders before abs totally. I'm not normally attracted to the skinny guy...well, I have been married for almost 11 years to someone with broad shoulders and a nice @ss . But, I do like my arms more than my abs...they just don't photograph as well .

Besides, having huge legs as a result of squats and deadlifts is more appealing to me than nice abs or gunz.

Re: What's so dumb about curls?

Biceps curls are certainly function if you are going to do anything that involves flexion of the arms...

It does amuse me the way they are demonized these days. You certainly don't want to base your routine on them, but they are fine to include.

Re: What's so dumb about curls?

Please stop. Really. The argument for or against any excersize has nothing to do with how you look unless you are a body builder, or a vain narcissitic ***, but I repeat myself.

The argument for curls is that they strength not only the upper arm, but the ligaments and tendons at the elbow joint, which reduces injury when pulling (deadlift) and supporting (snatch) heavy weight. It is also useful in sports where there is a great deal of upper body pulling (full contact field sports and the grappling arts).

Any discussion about how to train based on what the resulting body shape will be has left the realm of fitness.

Jamie, this is a particularly interesting statement to me, having suffered a torn bicep tendon during deadlifts. Do you think that doing curls will help strengthen these tendons and prevent such an injury, even more so than all of the other pulling exercises we do in Crossfit? It makes sense, but I'm wondering if there is much benefit in this area, given the high amount of pulling exercises we already do in Crossfit, such as 45 pullups a day as part of the warm up.
