Rectus Femoris Soreness

Whenever I play a sport with sprinting, eventually, I have one run in which my rectus femoris, in one or both legs just gets super sore all of the sudden. I don't know if this is a strain, or a cramp, or what. And it stays sore for days. This happens pretty much every time I play anything these day, and from that point on, I'm significantly crippled, in terms of play. Why is this happening and how do I prevent it?
