Open Competition

Is anyone being charged to have the open WODs judged and verified at the gym they belong to?

Re: Open Competition

I am pretty sure everyone is being charged $20, no matter where you workout at.

That's not how i interpreted Amy's question. Sounds like she's working out elsewhere, but going into a box to do the Open workouts and they're charging for the privilege.

Assuming I've interpreted correctly, they're well within their rights too. Sounds like a dumb thing to do though. I'd go do it at a different one. Alternatively you can submit film evidence to HQ of your Open wods.

Re: Open Competition

I'm with David -
Try to find a box that has a date/time scheduled for athletes to perform the Open workouts.
$20, per judged workout seems a bit high to me. The box has to have enough L1 certified trainers there to judge numerous athletes, in addition to their own members, so I could understand if it was a $20 fee to judge all of an individual's workouts (1 time per week) for the Open season, though.

I have no idea where Novato is, but CrossFit 951 is not charging anyone to come do the open workouts. We are open all week, and will have trainers available to judge you. Just call or email ahead of time.

Novato is northern Marin County... that would be quite a commute!

There's probably a mix. Some free for members, some not. But really, there's no reason they shouldn't.

Would you expect to go to a powerlifting competition, O-lifting competition, 5K, triathalon, soccer league, gymnastics comp, or basically any organized athletic competition in the universe without paying a fee? Of course not.

Bottom line: it takes extra resources in the form of more people to judge, time, and set up/take down equipment, and depending on what the WOD's are a lot of smaller boxes may have to either buy some equipment and/or have several "heats," meaning longer hours. The Open is an extra service that is not required for your fitness training.

Regionals are probably a lot more expensive, plus a plane ticket or long drive for most people. Would you complain about that?

The $20 is to CFHQ to register for the open. I assume the box is charging their own fee above that.

Re: Open Competition

I paid my $20 to register for the open but was surprised that my box is charging any athlete who wants to "compete" and possibly earn a spot on the team an extra fee per workout, even though they are at set dates and times. That wasn't the case at my old gym--just wondered if it's a new trend.

Re: Open Competition

Wait, you're already paying a monthly membership fee and they want to charge you even more for each Open workout? Sounds pretty underhanded to me....they should be doing everything they can to encourage as many members as possible to come out and compete, since more people can only help the team's chances of qualifying.
