Re: Sambo!

No, but I've been on the receiving end of some.
My first ever Judo randoori I was stuck in with an Eastern European guy who couldn't speak a single word of English, couldn't even tell us where he was from.
He sort of signed that he'd played before, was given a white belt and put up against me as another big guy. Well, there's big and there's big. I'm 6' tall, 210lbs and was strong through Thai Boxing and was about 35. This guy was 6'4", probably nearer 250lbs and just a wall of muscle, enormous shoulders and legs, no fat, around 27 years old.
For 30 minutes he ground my face into the mat, it was like fighting your dad when you're 6. I could not even wobble him.
Then a Czech guy who spoke Russian turned up and they all had a jolly good laugh together. 'This is Major Yuri XXXXX, Russian Sambo champion and special forces instructor,' he said.
So, I'll say this for Sambo. It works.

Re: Sambo!

That reminds me of when I was rolling with this blind judo guy... I was just treated like a rag doll.

Re: Sambo!

If you haven't come across it already, google Scott Sonnon or R-Max. I don't really care for him or his fitness stuff, but his SAMBO videos really added a lot to my ground game. The mentality is completely different than BJJ, it's worth checking out.

Re: Sambo!

Just moved to Moscow, Russia and will be here for one year...I am currently searching for a place nearby. I did Jiu Jitsu at Fort Meade, MD and then again at New Bern BJJ in NC on and off for about a year. I have lived in Cairo, Egypt for a year and really miss having something active to do...once the smoke clears from all these fires I'm sure I'll be able to find a good place.

Re: Sambo!

Chris, yes you should be able to find several places to train in sambo!!! If you are into grappling you should take advantage of the opertunity you have being there.

Re: Sambo!

Don't suppose anyone knows a good source for Sambo techniques online? Hard to tell the good from the bad.
