Re: Official WordPress users thread.

You people are funny. That picture was taken by Gregg Arsenuk (the owner of Guerrilla Fitness) during my Level 1 Fran. I was feeling evil that afternoon.

Kris, I think I fixed the FAQ page. It WAS looking funky. I don't have IE7 installed yet, can you tell me if it's looking better?

As for the "Home" page, thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want a work-around unless I have to. I want to just change the name of the page in the .php file. I know there's a way to do it, I just can't figure it out. But I will check out PageMash and see if that helps. I think there is something in my template that is overwriting some of my plug-ins, because the page order plug-in is set up properly, and still just not working.

Adam, I'm sending you a note with my header.php file and an explanation of how I have probably messed it up. Thanks in advance.

Melissa

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Cool; I got it, and sent it back - let us know how it works.

For everyone else: her theme was using a function that called on wp_page_menu if using WordPress 2.7 or above, and wp_list_pages for everything below that... and the code she was told to modify was the wp_list_pages code, so it wasn't even being seen.

wp_page_menu has an optional parameter that looked like this in her code:

wp_page_menu('show_home=1&menu_class=page-navi&depth=1');

So we're going to pull out the "show_home=1" part and see what happens with this:

wp_page_menu('menu_class=page-navi&depth=1');

We'll see. Oh, and if anyone wants more about this, try here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_page_menu

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Adam - thank you so much! It's all set up exactly the way I wanted it now. What took you 15 minutes would have taken me hours.

Appreciate the help.

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

No problem; glad to help.

(oh, and in case anyone's watching this... despite the theme trying to get all 2.7 savvy, it didn't work - it was calling on the wp_list_pages function the whole time. I tweaked the arguments of that function, and voila.)

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

For anyone needing to test their site in various browsers, check out http://browsershots.org (WFS).

It won't let you mouse-over stuff or test things, it just gives you screenshots... but it's better than nothing.

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Thanks to Adam and Kris for their help so far! though, Kris, I will say that whole thing with the header link is a little over my head -- i have a friend taking a look at it for me

wondering what plugins people would consider to be "must haves".

thanks for the feedback

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

You're welcome - and if you need some help with that div suggestion of Kris' (which could be a really good solution, btw), let me know.

Re: plugins - funny you should ask... I wrote a blog post about that very topic: http://blackboxwebsites.com/47/24-es...crossfit-site/ (WFS)

If there's a specific feature you're looking for, though, just ask.

Re: Official WordPress users thread.

Adam

thanks for the blog post. lots of good tips there.

couple follow up questions:

Are there any particular things I need to configure under settings for Bad Behavior, Feedburner, Subscribe to Comments?

Do you know anything about Wordpress Mobile Addition and WP Super Cache? would you recommend these?

thanks

Bad Behavior and Subscribe to Comments pretty much work right out of the box, although I will say that I've seen BB to slow down sites lately, so I don't use it on my main site anymore. Instead, I've been going with Akismet and WP Spam-Free, and I haven't had a single spam show up yet, and no false positives, either.

Feedburner just asks you to enter your feedburner id, which is totally straightforward.

Never seen Wordpress Mobile Edition until now, but CrowdFavorite does some good work, so you're probably in good hands. http://www.intersquash.com/index.php is also a good way to easily set up any site for use on an iPhone.

I wouldn't worry about caching plugins until you're seeing some serious traffic. But, if you are, then WP Super Cache is, I believe, the one to go with.
