Omega-3s, how much is enough?

I do the WODs at my local affiliate as prescribed, 3-5 days a week. I also hit the home gym for deadlifts, pullups, KB swings, and stuff of that nature. My question for the group is how much Omega-3s should I be taking in per day? (please excuse my poor grammar). I currently take GNC's Triple Strength Fish oil, which is 900mg per serving. I take two pills, one in the morning with my vitamins, and one at night before bedtime. Is 1800 too much, not enough?

I'm deploying to Afghanistan in July, and my goals are to increase my overall endurance. I've been back in the gym for about two or three weeks now, after a month long break. My goals are to start doing two-a-days three times a week next week, mixing in the CFE with my affiliate's programming.

I appreciate the help.

Kent

I like the Whole9's fish oil calculator: http://whole9life.com/fish-oil/ (wfs)

I take between 4.5-5 g per day, and I'm pretty sure I may be on the low side for some people here.

Re: Omega-3s, how much is enough?

The dose in terms of the amount of fish oil is totally irrelevant, what you need to know is the amount of EPA and DHA in the fish oil that you are taking. From there the fish oil calculator can give you a good recommendation on how much of the fish oil you should be taking. The EPA and DHA are the stuff you are taking the fish oil for, and unfortunately the amounts vary WILDLY depending on the quality of the fish oil you purchased.

Checked out the whole-9 calculator. My next question is, do you divide up the individual doses, or take 'em all at once?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Omega-3s, how much is enough?

Splitting any vitamin, mineral, food, nutrient, or supplement up throughout the day is generally better than taking it all at once. But if you forget to take it in the morning it's not like you're going to have any negative reactions or OD if you take the morning and night dose with your dinner.

Just out of curiosity, what did the calculator tell you? And did you check the EPA and DHA doses on the stuff you're taking now? 900mg is probably the total fish oil content, and I'm guessing the EPA+DHA would only be about 300mg or so per pill. If that's the case you'd be taking 10-20 pills per day most likely.

900mg (3 1000 mg tabs at 300 DHA/EPA each) is enough to relieve my chronic neck pain. 1800 is probably plenty, but it's almost impossible to take too much.

Re: Omega-3s, how much is enough?

EPA content is 647
DHA is 253

Total pills in one day for my weight and health factor was 7.

Sounds about right. You may be able to adjust it down a little over time but normally recommended doses are higher when people first start taking fish oil.

See, that just seems excessive to me. company marketing trying to sell a lot of fish oil. I am a true believer in fish oil, but there is a point of diminishing returns:

- Like I said, I take 900mg and it took away pain I'd been having every day for years from an injury.

- My wife had chronic swelling in her hands of unknown cause. 900mg took it away in a few days.

- My mother-in-law had chronic hip pain (to the point of difficulty walking) unrelieved by physical therapy and prescription meds. It went away after she started taking only 600mg a day.

Do you really need 6000+ mg a day?
