Butcher / Fish Guy In San Diego

I am moving back to San Diego in a few weeks and am looking for some help. Everyone on the board says that the best way to get protien cheap is to find a good butcher. Well... I was wondering if anyone has a butcher and or fish market that they would recommend in San Diego (North County, Del Mar / Encnitas to be exact).

Thanks

They are not solely a butcher per say, but Seaside Market (WFS) has a great meat/fish department. They have grass fed beef as well.

Pelly's Fish Market (WFS) has excellent seafood.

I have heard good things about Tip Top Meats (WFS), but have yet to try them.

Lastly, Homegrown Meats (WFS) rocks! It is in La Jolla. Not cheap, but very good, and the guys that work there know their stuff. They specialize in grass fed beef.

Thanks Andrew. I have been to Tip Top, they are good but quite pricey. They tend to specialize in prime and aged cuts. I have not heard of any of the other places so I will check them out.

Re: Butcher / Fish Guy In San Diego

Here's one more. El Nopalito (WFS) has a restaurant and market in the same shopping center (but not same building).

A chef friend of mine says the butcher at the market is great. He said the meat is really good, and really cheap. I am sure it is not grass fed or anything, but supposedly is good. Maybe I'll have to make some carne asada for dinner this weekend and test it out.

By the way, the carne asada at Seaside is great.

The best carne asada in San Diego is at Iowa Meat Farms down off mission gorge road. But, it is kinda far from North County coastal San diego.

Can you tell I like carne asada?

The Little Italy Farmers Market is downtown on Saturdays--they've got a pretty good assortment of grass-fed and fresh-caught stuff.

I've never been to the farmer's market in Little Italy. Will definitely have to check that out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Butcher / Fish Guy In San Diego

Hello All,

Iowa Meat Farms on Mission Gorge Road is very good.

http://www.iowameatfarms.signonsandiego.com/

I am glad my first post was about a subject near and dear to my heart. I have been to many of the others mentioned and find their customer service, consistency and prices (a little high, but worth it) to be the best. Unfortunately I am moving to Seattle in two weeks and will have to look for a new butcher up there.

I may have to start a new "Best Meat in Seattle" Thread.

Cheers,

Glenn.
