Deadlift: Level of lower back pain poll!

I was not sure if I should put this in injury or not, but here it is.

After CFT the other day, and any other DL days, my lower back hurts. My question is really about form more than the pain. I was able to run the 5K in 25:45 the next day close to PR, so I am not in excruciating pain. I am wondering how much lower back pain is to be expected? I have been lifting off and on for about 10yrs, I understand muscle soreness. But I have never really worked DL. I am wondering if my form might be off. I will probably get some digital coaching in the future.

How much lower back pain does everyone have after DL days?

I have watched every youtube/Ripptoe instruction possible and read deadlift threads here on this site. Thanks in advance for taking a look.

Re: Deadlift: Level of lower back pain poll!

For high rep DLs, my back hurts about an 11 on a 1-10 scale. For this the gov't doesn't tax a piece of my retirement. On ME DL day, usually, about 2-3/10. And lately many daily living activities are giving me a tired sore
1-2/10. Annoying.

My guess is that you are doing it wrong. Keep your head up, eyes looking up (say about 45 dergees up the wall or mirror in front of you, pick a spot and stay locked onto it. Lift the weight straight up keeping your back strainght.

Everytime I have hurt my back doing DL's (3 times now) I have let my eyes wonder south to see how my form looks. If you are wondering how your form looks ask someone to watch you or better yet to film you lifting.

WS link to video of DL and written discription
http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...BDeadlift.html

watch the guys eyes and how they stay locked on the whole lift

BTW when I started doing DL's the right way I went from a max lift of 250 to 350 with no pain VERY fast. The proper form will lend to better quality lifts!

I have to disagree. You want to maintain a neutral spine for the movement. Don't look up. It's not good for your cervical spine(neck).

Is there a chance you can get your deadlift filmed and upload a video of it for us to critique? It is hard to coach through the internet, and even harder without a video.

You should not be having that much pain from deadlifts.

If it hurts you're doing something wrong.

Yeah I feel DL in my hamstrings not lower back. Definitely not pain either, just normal muscle soreness...

Re: Deadlift: Level of lower back pain poll!

On my very best form days, DL gives me ZERO low back pain. My traps, rhomboids and hamstrings are sore the next day, but not my low back.

On iffy form days, DL gives me SOME low back pain.

Re: Deadlift: Level of lower back pain poll!

Thanks for all the response. I do think that my form might be lacking based on your responses. My head wandering is not normally an issue. I do tend to look up (45deg) and have read numerous articles against it. Might try straight ahead the next time and see how my back handles it. My back is never in pain, just really sore. I would like to feel it in my hamstrings/traps more. Thanks again...
