Don't laugh, I've done it. Went 400 miles out of my way to get to Tuscaloosa, AL for a plate of ribs at Dreamland. Then to New Orleans for a plate of etoufee' at Mama's (not BBQ, but delicious) Then another 200 miles out of the way to go to Angelo's in Fort Worth, TX. Then to Midland, TX for some Pit BBQ at KD's. After that, there is no good BBQ west of Midland. That makes me sad.

I don't mess around when it comes to barbeque.

Tom, please follow the link to MeatFest 2010 next June, it's about 1560 miles out of your way, but hey, if you're serious about BBQ........................

Re: Where's the best BBQ in Memphis?

Rendezvous is good but overrated IMHO. There is a hole in the wall called "cozy corner" on dannythomas and east parkway. As far as ribs go there are no rivals. Also try out "central bbq" for an all around good menu AND a better part of town.

You've never been to Oakland, my friend.

If there is actual, true, decent BBQ in Oakland, I must know immediately. I have been unable to get my fix since I moved to the PacNW from central TX, the holy land of bbq, but will be in Oakland in 2 weeks visiting my sister...

Re: Where's the best BBQ in Memphis?

Double D's is the best, its a hole-in-the wall in the first block of International Bl just south of the lake. $5 will get you a lot of good food that you carry away in a greasy bag. Best ribs by far. Problem is, sometimes its closed. Sometimes for like a week at a time. And always on Wednesdays & Sundays. Little flaky.

Doug's #1 Barbecue, on San Leandro Street at 77th, across the train tracks from the Coliseum. Meat is all awesome, sides not so much. The original Doug's on San Pablo closed a couple years ago. This one has a great story - the woman who used to clean Doug's at night and keep the smoker going finally talked Doug out of his sauce recipes. She'd never been a cook there, but cleaned up after everyone else left every night for 20 years.

Uncle Willie's on 14th St is ok, but the sauce is a little too vinegar. Works best with their chicken or brisket, the ribs & links aren't as good. Pricey.

Looney's Smokehouse across from Children's Hospital is good too, but more western/Texas than the KC style you usually get in Oakland. Great dry rubs.

Aren't you glad I didn't say Everett & Jones? haha

This is true.

I lived in SOCAL for a few years, and while tri-tip is quite good, it's not BBQ.

Ben, thanks for the tips, sent the info to my sis and told her to plan accordingly.

I have not been there but many people I know that have lived in or do live in Memphis recommend this place.
