not sure what exactly you call them but it is essentially when you do a powerful pull up, release and catch another bar higher up. it is like a campus dyno in climbing. i think i have seen a picture on the CF main page, a long time ago of a set up like this.
anyway i was doing these on a smith machine today, going from the bar to the top of the machine, it worked ok. my question is is anybody else doing these and how do you like them? also what is the distance between the bars that you use?

These sound like those clapping pullups that that strong fellow was doing in a video someone posted (doing a pullup, releasing the bar to clap when his head was above the bar, and then catching the bar for another rep). He was also doing heavy cleans for reps and heavy backsquats for 20 reps. Impressive!

Anyway, a little different than dynoing overhead but a similar option. It seems like, however, the landing would be different. When going overhead, you can deadpoint to the top bar (i.e., catch the top bar with arms fully extended and body "floating") and not shock load your arms and shoulders as much as catching yourself on the way down. I wonder which one would be "better" and which would be less prone to causing injury.

Is it analogous to jumping and squatting...seems more power is actually developed doing weighted pull-ups vice the catch release pulls...Both Jumping and these catch/release are explosive exercises, so maybe you can incorporate those different types of muscle movements on the pull-up the same way you do with jumping vs squatting?
